Tips on Observing and Using References for Visual Media (series)

Listen and select a reference form the references to work with

Listen in detail to every Instrument/element being used in the references

  • This helps create a “palette” of sounds to work with.

  • This also helps to make it seem/sound like the same composer(s) or creators are working on this entire show and help bring “consistency” to the series/show.

Listen to the Style/Mood of the references that you are focused on using

Do not go outside of what is being requested

  • They are very specific on what they NEED for the show, and have all narrowed down the sound)

  • They have SEEN the visuals, so they KNOW what is needed, and the direction is predetermined.

Mimic the Tempo of the reference you are focused on.

ALWAYS A/B cues (Listen back and forth from the reference and YOUR MIX).

  • USE this to compare and match the overall mix

  • This helps paint a perfect picture of the frequencies, Loudness, and Balance that they are expecting to hear, and to make sure it is “broadcast ready” (ready to be used for the show/visual media).

This is also a Good way to tell if you have GONE OFF course.. When comparing your work side by side with the references,

    • Ask yourself - "Could my Cue be on/in the SAME Playlist as the references?"

      • IF the Answer is YES, you have stayed in the Same Wheelhouse/Vein as directed

      • IF the Answer is NO, you have strayed OFF path, and it's best to Refine to get back on track with the direction.
